Stay warm and efficient: common LPG boiler issues

Stay warm and efficient: common LPG boiler issues

According to the UK census 2022, an estimated 4.5 million households across Great Britain are not connected to the mains gas grid.

For many of these rural, off-grid homes, LPG, isn’t just a convenience – it’s a lifeline. It's efficient, versatile, and cost-effective, keeping homes warm, water hot flowing, and daily routines running smoothly. From cosy living rooms and family bathrooms to kitchens ready for the breakfast rush, LPG ensures life at home stays comfortable and dependable.

But when your LPG boiler suddenly stops working, the impact is felt immediately. No heating in the freezing winter months or no hot water for showers can be more than inconvenient – it can disrupt your daily life, leave your family cold and miserable, and push up energy bills. Beyond the immediate frustration, inefficiencies caused by faulty boilers can increase fuel use and even raise your household’s carbon footprint.

That’s why proactive maintenance and awareness of common LPG boiler issues are so important, especially ahead of winter. Knowing what to look out for, and acting early to winter prep, can save time, prevent costly repairs, and keep your home comfortable and energy-efficient throughout the year.

At Northern Energy Gas, we’ve spent decades helping rural households across the UK get the most from their LPG systems. We understand that reliability, efficiency, and sustainability go hand in hand. So here we’re going to take a closer look at some of the most common LPG boiler faults, and how you can prevent them to ensure you keep your home warm and running smoothly.

Low pressure – when your heating just isn’t hot enough!

One of the first signs that your LPG boiler might be struggling is a drop in pressure – something that’s easy to miss but capable of affecting the comfort of your home. Low pressure can cause uneven heating, radiators furthest from the boiler to stop warming up, central heating pipes to make banging or gurgling noises, or in more serious cases, the boiler to switch off completely.

These issues can translate to chilly mornings, cold bathrooms, or a slow-heating kitchen, making everyday life uncomfortable. Common causes of low flow pressure include minor leaks in the system, recently bled radiators, or a faulty pressure relief valve (PRV). When pressure is low, your boiler has to work harder to compensate, using more fuel and wasting energy, which can increase your bills and impact your home’s efficiency.

Check you boiler’s pressure gauge regularly. It should sit around 1-1.5 bar when cold. If you notice frequent drops or any of the warning signs above, resist the temptation to keep topping it up yourself. Instead, call a Gas Safe registered engineer to investigate and resolve the problem before it worsens. Keeping your system balanced and well-maintained ensures your home stays warm, your energy bills stay manageable, and your boiler operates safely and efficiently.

Boiler won’t light? Understanding ignition issues

Few things are more frustrating than turning on your heating, only to find your boiler refuses to light. For households relying on LPG, this can quickly turn a cold morning into a stressful start of the day.

Ignition problems can have several causes including a faulty spark electrode, a blocked flue, or an interruption to your LPG supply. Before calling an engineer, it’s worth checking that your LPG storage tank has enough gas, and that the supply valve is fully open. For added peace of mind and to avoid unexpected run-outs, some households opt for an automatic refill service offered by many LPG suppliers, which keeps your tank topped up and your heating running smoothly.

It's worth checking your timer settings too. If you’ve had a power cut or someone’s accidently knocked the panel, it would by why your boiler isn’t firing up. Also worth a look at is your thermostat settings. If the temperature is set low, the boiler might not fire up, so increase the temperature to see if that helps.

If fuel level and other checks are fine and the boiler still won’t ignite, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Even modern boilers with electronic ignition can suffer from sensor or internal component issues, and safety should always come first. A qualified engineer can quickly diagnose the problem, restoring reliable heating and hot water – and get your home and family back to comfort without wasting fuel or risking damage.

Pilot light or sensor problems – what to know

Even the most reliable LPG boilers can run into occasional problems, especially as they get older. In traditional boilers, a pilot light that keeps going out or a worn sensor can lead to intermittent heating – frustrating when you just want a warm and cosy home.

A pilot light can blow out for a variety of reasons, but you can usually relight it by following the instructions provided in your boiler manual. However, do not attempt to relight it if you smell gas, notice a change in the flame colour, or see sooty marks on or around the boiler. In that case, turn the boiler off immediately and call your LPG supplier for advice.

Modern LPG boilers often have electronic ignition, which makes pilot light issues much less common. Still, sensors or internal components can wear out over time.

The good news is that most issues can be prevented with regular servicing. Routine checks keeps sensors calibrated, spot early signs of wear and help ensure you boiler continues to run efficiently and reliably. Staying on top of maintenance protects your home and family from risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning, and means you’re less likely to be caught out on a cold morning.

Thermostat or control faults

Sometimes, your boiler itself is perfectly fine, but the culprit is the controls that tell it what to do. Thermostats, timers, sensors, and other controls all help your LPG heating system run smoothly. If they fail or stop communicating properly, even a perfectly good boiler can act unpredictably.

It’s a good idea to check your controls every so often to make sure they’re working correctly. If anything seems unusual, like the heating switching on and off at the wrong times, have it inspected sooner rather than later. Staying on top of your controls helps to avoid unnecessary breakdowns and keeps your home comfortable.

Frozen condensate pipes

Cold weather can be a boiler’s worst nightmare, and a frozen condensate pipe is one of the biggest causes of breakdowns in winter months for remote rural off-grid homes.

For homeowners, when pipes freeze, the flow is blocked, and the boiler can lock out entirely until the issue is resolved meaning no heating or hot water. If this happens, try thawing by applying warm, but not hot water, and a warm compress directly to the pipes to ensure they don’t crack or burst as they thaw.

The good news is that the solution is usually straightforward. Insulating external pipes can prevent them from freezing in the first place. Pipe insulation is normally tube-shaped and can be cut to size to wrap around pipes. It can be purchased for just a few pounds from your local DIY  and comes in a variety of thicknesses and materials such as polyethylene foam, rubber or foil tape to fit around bends and joints.

A small investment can save a lot of stress, disruption, and cold showers when temperatures drop.

Keep your boiler running smoothly

Your LPG boiler is a reliable, safe, and efficient way to keep your home warm and your hot water flowing – but like any important piece of equipment, it works best when well maintained.

Regularly servicing isn’t just about avoiding expensive breakdowns. A well-maintained boiler runs cleaner, uses less fuel, and keeps your home consistently warm, helping you get the most from your LPG system. It can also help extend the life of your boiler, saving you money in the long run while reducing your environmental impact.
