Top Tips to Protect and Prolong the Life of Your LPG Boiler

Our LPG boilers work quietly away in the background, keeping our rooms warm, and providing hot water throughout the year.

On average, a domestic LPG boiler will last anywhere between 15 and 20 years, but just like a car, a little care and regular check-ups can go a long way to keeping it running at its best, and ensuring it lives a long, and efficient life. Learn more about the lifespan of your LPG boiler.3

While many modern LPG boilers come with generous warranties, some as long as 12 years on premium models, the real key to a long and efficient boiler life is looking after it properly. By giving your boiler the attention it deserves, you’ll not only help prevent costly breakdowns, but you’ll also ensure it continues to take good care of you and your family for years after the warranty has run out.

In this blog, we’ll share some simple but essential steps you can take to keep your boiler in great shape – helping it stay energy efficient, reliable, and gas safe - so you can relax knowing your home’s heating is in good hands.

Regular maintenance

Your LPG boiler works tirelessly to provide heat and hot water throughout the year. But just like a car, it needs a little TLC to keep it running smoothly. That’s where an annual boiler service comes in - think of it as your boiler’s MOT: a once-a-year health check to make sure everything is safe, efficient, and ready to perform when you need it most.

The best time to book your boiler service is in the summer months when you’re not relying on your heating, so your Gas Safe registered engineer can give it a proper check-up when it’s cool. But if you haven’t had it serviced yet, and it's overdue – don’t wait. Do it now before the cold weather creeps in.

Skipping a service might feel like a small saving in the short term, but it’s a risky gamble. An unchecked boiler is more likely to break down, cost more in emergency repairs, and most importantly, could develop hidden faults that put your household in danger.

During a service, your qualified Gas Safe engineer will clean key components, check for signs of wear and tear, replace worn parts if needed, and make sure your system is running efficiently and safely. It’s a small annual investment that can add years to your boiler’s life and keep your heating bills lower.

One final point – fit a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, and potentially deadly - which is why it’s often called ‘The Silent Killer’. An alarm costs just a few pounds, but it could save your life. Pair it with regular servicing, and you’ll have the peace of mind that your boiler is keeping your family safe, as well as warm.

Keep your system healthy

It’s not just your boiler that needs attention – your radiators and system pressure play a huge role in keeping your home warm, and energy-efficient – so worth checking regularly.

One simple but effective task is bleeding your radiators. If you hear gurgling, rattling, or notice cold spots, it’s a sign that air has become trapped inside. Bleeding your radiators releases that air, allowing hot water to circulate properly. The result? Warmer rooms, a more efficient system, and potentially lower energy bills.

Equally important is keeping an eye on your boiler pressure. Most systems operate best when pressure sits between 1 and 2 bar. Too low, and your boiler may struggle to heat your home efficiently: topping it up with water is usually all it takes (check your boiler manual for instructions). Too high? Bleeding your radiators will usually bring it back into the safe zone.

These two simple checks make a big difference to the performance. They keep your heating system running smoothly, prevent unnecessary strain and wear on your LPG heating system, and help you avoid costly emergency repairs.

Don’t overwork your boiler

Repeated stop-start cycles – constantly switching your LPG boiler on and off – can put unnecessary strain on its components, wearing parts out faster than usual. So something that should be avoided.

Even in the summer months, it’s a good idea to run your boiler for an hour or so every few weeks. This keeps pumps and valves moving and prevents them from seizing up after long periods of inactivity.

You can also ease the burden on your boiler by making your home more energy-efficient. Loft and cavity wall insulation are excellent long-term investments, but even small, cost-effective measures can make a real difference. DIY draught-proofing with insulating tape, which can be bought cheaply from your local DIY, or adding simple draught excluders around doors and windows, helps keep heat in and reduces the work your boiler has to do.

The result? Less strain on your boiler, a longer lifespan – and lower LPG bills. A win, win!

Keep an eye on fuel supply

One of the great things about LPG (Liquid Propane Gas) is that, unlike oil, you don’t have to worry about sludge or sediment lurking at the bottom of your tank and clogging your system. That said, you do still need to keep an eye on your tank level because running out is a headache no one wants.

If your LPG storage tank runs dry, your boiler will automatically lock out to protect itself, leaving you without heating and hot water until it is refilled and reset.

That’s where Northern Energy has you covered. Our automatic top-up scheme takes all the hassle out of managing your fuel. We monitor your usage and tank levels, then schedule deliveries before your tank runs low – so you’ll never face the dreaded ‘we’ve run out!’ moment on the coldest day of the year.

Even better, we also pay the VAT on your deliveries with our LPG Package*. It’s convenience, peace of mind, and savings – all bundled together. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the comfort of knowing your home will stay warm and toasty all year round.

Catch issues before they escalate

Even with the best care, your LPG boiler can develop issues over time. The key is to catch problems early before they turn into costly or dangerous situations. Watch out for these warning signs:

Strange noises – banging, whistling, or gurgling could be an indication that something isn’t quite right

Yellow or orange flames – your LPG flame should always be a steady blue. Yellow or orange flames suggest incomplete combustion, which could produce carbon monoxide

An unexpected increase in your gas usage – if your bills suddenly rise but your routine and the weather haven’t changed, it might mean your boiler isn’t running efficiently

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait. Act fast. Call out a qualified Gas Safe engineer to inspect your system and carry out any necessary repairs.

Time for a new boiler?

If your LPG boiler is old, noisy, inefficient, or prone to breakdowns, it may be time to consider an upgrade. Replacing your boiler could save you money in the long term, reduce stress, and give you peace of mind knowing your heating is reliable and efficient.

Modern LPG boilers are compact, highly efficient, and far more environmentally friendly when compared to older models. Even better, they’re compatible with renewable gases, which are drop-in alternatives to traditional LPG. This means your existing system could one day run on a greener, more sustainable fuel without the need for costly home upgrades. Unlike alternatives such as heat pumps, which usually require significant investment and modifications, LPG boilers let you keep your home warm and comfortable while reducing your carbon footprint - efficiently and conveniently.
