Future fuel options: Why renewable gases are the way forward for off-grid homes

As the UK intensifies its efforts to reach net zero by 2050, the conversations surrounding how we heat our homes and businesses sustainably has never been more important. For several years, heat pumps have dominated government messaging, strongly supported by incentives and widespread campaigns. But the reality is becoming increasingly clear: while heat pumps work well for some properties, renewable gases such as bioLPG and rDME have a critical role to play for thousands of homes and businesses across the UK, particularly those that are off-grid.

Future heating options: what’s on the table?

Heat pumps:

Heat pumps, whether air-source or ground-source, work by capturing natural heat energy from the air or ground and transferring it to the inside of your property. They can heat radiators and provide hot water and are considered one of the most efficient low-carbon technologies currently available.

The scheme supports households in England and Wales looking to replace fossil fuel systems with low-carbon alternatives, provided the property holds a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The government’s campaign page provides more information on heat pump installation and technology.

It’s important, when considering installing a heat pump, to consider the upsides and the downsides that come with them:

The benefits:

  • Highly efficient and reliable
  • Environmentally friendly, with no onsite emissions
  • Can reduce carbon emissions by up to 70% when compared to a traditional gas boiler
  • Low maintenance due to fewer moving parts
  • Helps improve air quality by reducing pollution

The challenges to consider:

  • High upfront costs, even with government support
  • Significant installation work, which may be disruptive to your property and/or garden
  • Higher electricity usage, impacting running costs
  • Significant additional investment – in many cases, upgraded radiators, underfloor heating, improved insulation, or larger hot water cylinders are required
  • Not suitable for every property, particularly older, poorly insulated, or space-restricted buildings

Renewable gases: A practical low-carbon option

For many off-grid homes and business across the UK, LPG (liquid petroleum gas) has long been the fuel of choice. Reliable, efficient, and widely available, LPG offers an immediate, practical, affordable, and environmentally friendly solution for properties without access to the mains gas grid. As the UK transitions towards a low-carbon future, LPG also provides a strong foundation for moving to renewable gas alternatives, such as bioLPG and rDME, without the disruption of replacing existing heating systems.

These renewable gases are drop-in solutions that can be used alongside traditional LPG, using the same bulk LPG storage tanks, boilers and delivery networks. That means households and businesses can transition to low-carbon heating without major cost, disruption, or new infrastructure – something many renewables cannot offer.

Government policy: A turning point for renewable gases

As the debate about future heating intensifies, the UK government has taken a significant step forward. On 18 November 2025, it launched a major consultation titled ‘Exploring the role of alternative heating solutions’. This marks one of the clearest indications yet that the future of heating in the UK will not rely on a single technology, but on a flexible mix that reflects the real diversity of British homes and businesses.

Crucially, this consultation explicitly includes renewable fuels, such as renewable LPG alternatives such as bioLPG and rDME.

The government acknowledges that while heat pumps will continue to play a central role in decarbonising the nation, alternatives must also be explored, particularly for properties where electric systems may not be suitable. Many off-grid, older, rural or heritage buildings face practical, financial or structural challenges that make heat pump installation difficult, and this consultation recognises that reality.

The consultation runs until 10 February 2026 giving homeowners, businesses, community groups, and trade-bodies plenty of time to respond. For anyone who currently relies on LPG and other off-grid fuels, this is a chance to ensure that renewable gases are fully recognised within the UK’s long-term energy strategy.

  • Policy and regulatory uncertainty

Electricity as a future heating option

Electricity is playing an increasingly central role in the UK’s transition to low-carbon heating. From powering heat pumps to electric boilers, it offers a range of options for both households and businesses looking to reduce emissions. But like any energy source, it comes with strengths and limitations – especially for off-grid or rural properties.

  • Low carbon footprint, especially when paired with renewable energy from wind or solar power
  • Simple installation with no requirement for storage tanks or flue systems
  • Low ongoing maintenance costs
  • No risk of gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Renewable energy compatibility – can be easily integrated with renewable energy sources such as solar

Which heating option is best?

It’s clear that no single heating solution fits every home or business. Heat pumps and electric systems will play a major role, but they are not suitable or affordable for everyone, especially in rural and hard-to-heat properties. And electric heating also has a part to play and can work well for smaller properties with low heat demand.

This is why renewable gases such as bioLPG and rDME matter. They offer a low-carbon, low-disruption alternative that works with existing LPG infrastructure, delivering real carbon savings while keeping energy reliable, affordable, and familiar.
