In the past few years, staycations have become a staple for many households in the UK. Now, we’re all on the lookout for new and exciting places to visit on our next family getaway. Harrogate, North Yorkshire

As far back as 1571, visitors have been flocking to the fresh mineral springs of Harrogate. Over the years, the town has grown into an affluent area known for its natural floral beauty, particularly within two of it's major tourist destinations; Valley Gardens and Royal Harlow Carr. And of course, we would be wrong to talk about the wonders of Harrogate without mentioning Bettys tearooms. As a traditional English tearoom, it’s just like stepping back in time! Enjoy a delicious freshly cooked meal in one of their two restaurants or grab a tasty snack from their shop to enjoy at home.

Although often visited as a day trip from Leeds or York, Harrogate itself is an excellent base for any special weekend away. From there, you can even visit the wondrous North York Moors and the glorious Yorkshire Dales.

Lincoln, Lincolnshire

Known for a fusion of traditional and modern life, Lincoln is a beautiful historic city full of heritage and culture. As well as the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, it’s full of castle remains, ancient walls, and medieval architecture. Engross yourself in English history and then explore the tranquil nature reserves and even the odd windmill.

If you’re lucky enough to visit Lincoln sometime between November and Christmas, Lincoln is well known for it's wondrous Christmas Markets and festive events. Our festive favourite is Lincoln Castle Illuminated – the perfect blend of history and modern celebration.

Yorkshire Wolds, East Yorkshire

Looking for rolling hills and stunning landscapes? The Yorkshire Wolds are home to both of these, and more. With picture perfect postcard villages and access to various walking routes, you won't be hard pressed to find something to see and do. Plus, the Yorkshire Wolds are surrounded by countless beautiful towns and quaint market villages which are steeped in local history. Malton, Helmsley and Fridaythorpe (which is the highest village in the Yorkshire Wolds at 550 ft) all have easy links for great walks in the Wolds, and you are sure to see something amazing - just don't forget the picnic!

And it’s not all about British history – we promise. East Yorkshire is also home to some of the North’s greatest beaches and seasides. From soaring cliffs, to shingle spits, and of course, British seaside resorts with family-friendly attractions and activities. Seaside towns like Bridlington become a hub for tourists looking to walk along the coasts.

Alnwick, Northumberland

Northumberland is home to some stunning historical sites with something to impress everyone. From the fortress of Bamburgh Castle, to the religious wonder of Hexham Abbey. It’s got to be said though, our favourite must be for a much more modern reason – Alnwick castle. While the castle itself was built in the 11th Century, it gained worldwide fame in the 21st century while starring as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films. And that’s not all Alnwick has to offer - as a traditional English market town, there’s lots to see and do while you’re on your magical trip around Northumberland.

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire

We’re sure most of our readers will know this, but for those that don’t - Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire is the past home of the legendary Robin Hood. A story which has been told the world over countless times and has even been remade as a Disney classic. There is no better place than Sherwood Forest to learn more about the man and legend.

Nottinghamshire is littered with landmarks from the legends of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, from the dungeons of the Old County Gaol where he was held captive by the Sheriff of Nottingham to the church where he wed his beloved Maid Marian.
