What do the additives in Premium Heating Oil do?

Premium Heating Oil contains additives to help your boiler run more efficiently and stop the build-up of deposits.

Here we take a look at what the additives actually do:

Additives 1

Anti-oxidants

The anti-oxidants keep the fuel fresh and slow down the formation of carbon particles, which (over time) will create sludge in the bottom of your oil tank

Additives 2

Dispersant

If your tank already has an element of sludge, the dispersant will gradually remove it. On average about an inch of sludge can be removed over a 12 month period

Additives 3

Detergents

Detergents help to keep the system clean. The nozzle on the boiler stays clean which ensures good combustion and less soot build up on the heat exchanger. This means that the boiler loses less efficiency between annual services

Additives 4

Corrosion inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitors are designed to prevent rust from forming in the heating oil system. These reduce the build-up of rust deposits in the fuel and will increase the life of metal parts

Additives 5

Metal de-activators

When in contact with copper or brass, heating oil will darken and degrade over time. Metal de-activators help to reduce fuel degradation caused by the interaction with yellow metals in the fuel system

Additives 6

Fuel stabilisers

Fuel stabilisers will inhibit deposits from forming when fuel is heated  by sunshine

In Conclusion

Using a higher grade fuel containing additives will help the oil tank, copper piping and boiler perform to their best ability. From the moment it is poured into your oil tank to the point of being burnt off, the fuel is fighting sludge build up, corrosion and degradation. The premium fuel prolongs the life of your boiler and helps it to work at its most efficient capacity, saving you money on fuel and boiler maintenance by cutting out the build-up of carbon and sludge on the vital components within the boiler.

Boiler Servicing

As well as using the best possible fuel in your heating system, your boiler should be serviced at least once a year by an OFTEC engineer to maintain high efficiency and safety standards.Having your boiler serviced annually (or in accordance with the manufacturers instructions) makes sense – it will ensure your boiler operates at peak performance, can reduce your fuel costs by up to 10% per annum and protect your family against carbon monoxide emissions. An annual service can also prevent inconvenient breakdowns and costly repairs. For more information on our Boiler Servicing click here.
