Northern Energy expands LPG delivery into the South West in partnership with Heltor Oils

A new chapter has begun for Northern Energy! Northern Energy expands LPG delivery into Devon and Cornwall in partnership with Heltor Oils

We’re proud to announce the expansion of our LPG delivery service across Devon and Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset, providing reliable, competitively priced energy to homes, farms and businesses throughout the South West.

From 1st September we began supplying bulk LPG directly from Heltor's Newton Abbot depot, strengthening local availability and offering a truly customer-focused alternative to the national suppliers.

This marks an exciting major milestone for our business as we continue to grow our footprint across the UK. And we couldn’t be prouder to be doing it in partnership with Heltor, another independent, family-run supplier with the same passion for exceptional customer service and community-first values.

A shared history, rooted in family, independence, and community

Heltor’s journey began back in the 1960’s on the Kingdon family farm. What started as a small rural fuel business quickly gained momentum. By the 1980’s, the company had moved to a dedicated site in Newton Abbot and had already built a strong reputation for reliability and service. Principles that still define the business today.

Now led by brothers Richard and Charlie, the third generation of the family, Heltor has grown into a major regional supplier through organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Today, Heltor has five depots across the South West, located at Newton Abbot, Plymouth, St. Austell, Barnstaple (as Devon Fuels), and Wellington (as Monument Fuels), and has built a strong presence and strengthened local supply for rural households and businesses.

Despite their impressive growth, Heltor has stayed close to its roots. As Richard says, ‘Our main core principles are to provide excellent customer service along with competitive pricing’.

It’s a philosophy that strongly reflects our own approach at Northern Energy, and one of the many reasons this partnership makes perfect sense.

The Northern Energy difference

As a fourth-generation family business founded in 1932, Northern Energy has always been driven by a simple promise: deliver outstanding service, reliability, and treat people with genuine C.A.R.E. These values lie at the heart of our growth and are exactly what we’re bringing to homes and businesses across the South West.

Why Northern Energy and Heltor are a perfect match

Both Northern Energy and Heltor share the same independent, family-run ethos, a commitment to delivering excellent customer service and competitive pricing, and strong community values. We also share an ambition for growth, particularly the opportunity to make a real impact in a regional market long dominated by national suppliers, without losing the personal touch

By teaming up with Heltor, Northern Energy can now offer a truly local service, with fast, dependable bulk LPG deliveries, fair and competitive pricing, and family-run customer care you can trust.

Together, we’re bringing something new to the region: a local, reliable alternative with genuine family values at its heart.

Expanding energy options for homes and businesses

Partnering with Northern Energy is a natural progression for Heltor. Many of their commercial and rural fuel customers already rely on bulk LPG, and too often, have been let down by major suppliers.

By joining forces, Northern Energy now delivers LPG directly from Heltor’s Newton Abbot depot, with fuel sourced from the Fawley refinery at Southampton. This ensures a secure, efficient and reliable supply, giving homes, farms and businesses across the South West the confidence that their energy needs will always be met.

Looking ahead

While heat pumps and new technologies continue to enter the market, the demand for oil and LPG remains strong, particularly across rural and off-grid areas. These communities need dependable, versatile heating solutions, and LPG continues to play a vital role.

And renewable gases are on the way. These future fuels, such as bioLPG and rDME, are a practical, affordable low-carbon alternative, with significantly lower carbon emissions and compatibility with existing LPG boilers and bulk storage tanks.

For off-grid areas like Devon and Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset, where heat pumps aren’t always suitable, particularly for older homes and farm buildings, renewable gases will provide a vital, lower-carbon choice without the need for expensive home upgrades.

With Heltor’s local expertise and Northern Energy’s LPG heritage and forward-thinking approach, we’re perfectly positioned to guide customers through the energy landscape of today and tomorrow.

A partnership built for the future

We’re proud to join forces with Heltor Oils and bring Northern Energy’s trusted service to even more customers across Devon and Cornwall, and Dorset and Somerset. Working alongside Heltor, we’re strengthening local energy supply, improving customer choice, and building a partnership grounded in shared values and shared ambition.

A message from our Managing Director, Stu Illingworth:

‘Partnering with Heltor feels like a natural fit. We’re two independent, family-run businesses that believe in looking after our customers properly, offering fair prices, reliability, and investing in the communities we serve. Together, we’re bringing a stronger, more reliable LPG offering to the South West. One that gives customers real choice and the level of service they deserve.’
