A beginners guide to LPG

A beginners guide to LPG

Whilst 84% of domestic properties are connected to the mains gas grid, according to Liquid Gas UK, the trade association for the LPG and bioLPG industry in the UK, for those people that choose to live off-grid, there are many benefits to be had - cleaner air, peace and quiet, less traffic congestion, beautiful scenery, and open spaces to mention just a few. But with all these positives also comes, what may be to some, the headache of getting acquainted with off-grid fuel choices.

We think that LPG is the ideal choice – it fuels all the usual household gas appliances such as central heating boilers, cookers and gas fires, and is the closest available alternative to mains gas.

It may be that you’re looking to change from your existing source of energy or perhaps you’ve just moved, or are considering moving to an off-grid property for the first time that uses LPG for heating, hot water, and perhaps even cooking.

Using bulk LPG (liquified petroleum gas) is a cost-effective and convenient way to heat your home. But if you’re new to LPG, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed, so in this blog, we’re going to look at what you need to know, and why we think LPG is the idea fuel choice.

So why should I choose LPG?

The recent extreme and sustained heatwaves experienced throughout Europe this summer have highlighted more than ever the effects of global warming, and we’re all becoming more and more aware of our carbon footprint. Well, LPG is a more environmentally friendly fuel than other alternatives such as domestic heating oil or solid fuels, emitting 12% less CO2 than oil and 90% less carbon monoxide than natural gas. And with ‘drop-in’ renewable gases such as bioLPG and rDME on the way, both more environmentally-friendly versions of traditional LPG, choosing LPG will ensure you’re good to go green, both now and into the future.

As we've already said, LPG is the nearest off-grid fuel to mains gas. Being highly efficient, it provides instant heat, so there’s no waiting around in the cold for your system to warm up. Instead, when your LPG system is switched on, you will feel nice and cozy in a matter of minutes.

It’s also easy to store in a special bulk tank on your property, which ensures a continuous supply – so no worry about power cuts and being left without heating or unable to cook until your power’s restored. LPG tanks can be either above ground, or below ground if space is limited or you do not want to spoil the aesthetics of your property. And unlike domestic heating oil, LPG is virtually impossible to steal.

If you’re thinking of changing from another energy source, the cost of an LPG installation, compared with other fuel sources such as heating oil, air source heat pumps, and electric, is significantly cheaper.

Is LPG safe?

The simple answer is yes, LPG is very safe, although it’s important your boiler and appliances are kept in good working order, and we would always recommend a gas safety check on an annual basis if you do go ahead with an LPG installation. This should always be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer – do not attempt to do it yourself!

Your engineer will service your LPG boiler and appliances, and do a visual inspection of your gas pipework to check and confirm there are no gas leaks. And equally important, as part of your service, your engineer also will check for carbon monoxide, often called the ‘Silent killer’, keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Do I need to enter into an LPG contract?

Yes, you do. When you’re wanting to fuel your home with bulk LPG, you will need to enter into a contract with your chosen supplier. Domestic bulk LPG contracts run for a maximum of two years, and within this period, you can only buy your LPG from the supplier that you’ve signed up with. After the two-year exclusivity period, or within 30 days of it's expiry date, you are free to switch if you so wish. Your existing supplier will advise you a month before you become eligible to switch – you can then decide whether you’re happy to stay with your current supplier and re-sign a contract for another 2 years, or alternatively switch to an alternative LPG supplier.

Your domestic LPG contract will outline the terms and conditions of the agreement, including pricing, safety regulations, and the responsibilities of both yourself and your supplier.

Do I need to buy an LPG tank?

When you’re in a contract, your supplier will own your LPG tank, and will charge you an annual tank rental fee, although you may be able to pay monthly.  Your supplier is responsible for maintaining your tank – making sure it’s inspected, tested, and maintained in accordance with the LPG Code of Practice. All ensuring it’s kept in tip-top condition.

Every home is different, and there are different sizes of tanks available to suit your individual circumstances, the most common being 1,410 litres in capacity. You will need to keep the area around the tank tidy and free from debris so your delivery driver can reach your tank easily and without obstruction, and so maintenance can be carried out.

LPG tanks can be located above ground, and also buried below ground, out of site, protecting the aesthetics of your property and also great when space is limited. It’s important to ensure compliance with the UK LPG tank installation regulations. These cover the storage of LPG and your supplier will be able to help and advice on the best location for your tank.

Can I opt to own my tank?

Whilst it is possible to own your own LPG storage tank, it’s something we would strongly advise against. LPG bulk storage vessels are heavily regulated and covered by a variety of legislation. As the owner of a bulk LPG tank, you would need to ensure that your tank is fully compliant with a range of legal requirements. Whereas under your supply contract, your supplier takes on all the relevant statutory duties and is legally obliged to discharge them.
