With the prolonged cold spell over the last week or two, your LPG boiler will have been working overtime, keeping your home cosy, your family comfortable, or ensuring the smooth running of your business. While it’s been doing its job, there’s no denying that the extra workload will have put your boiler under more strain than usual. And just like any hardworking engine, sometimes that strain manifests as noises such as banging, whistling or gurgling, that can catch your attention and cause concern.
If your boiler has been noisier that usual, don’t panic. Many of these noises are common and indicate issues that can be resolved with simple maintenance. However, sometimes they can also be a sign of a more significant issue that requires investigation by a qualified engineer. In this blog we’re going to take a look at some of the most common boiler noises, what they mean, how to fix them, and when to call in the experts.
What should my boiler sound like?
LPG boilers aren’t completely silent, so a few everyday noises are perfectly normal. When your boiler first fires up, you may hear a brief roaring sound as it ignites, followed by a gently, steady hum as it settles into doing its job. Occasional quiet clicks or ticking noises are normal, especially as components heat up or cool down.
That said, as with any hard-working system, things can and do go wrong from time to time, and boilers can develop faults. Often an unfamiliar or unexpected noise is the first sign that something isn’t quite right. If your boiler suddenly sounds noticeably louder, different, or more persistent than usual, it’s likely trying to tell you something and shouldn’t be ignored.
Vibrating noises
If your boiler has started making a vibrating or buzzing sound, the good news is that it’s often something relatively straightforward. In some cases, the vibration may be caused by loose mounting brackets or fixings, which allow the boiler casing or internal components to resonate during operation. Simply tightening them may be enough to stop the noise.
However, if the vibration noise continues, it may be pointing to a more underlying issue. Common causes include a malfunctioning pump, restricted airflow due to a blocked flue, or pressure within the system that’s higher than it should be.
If you think your boiler is vibrating,
- Check the pump to see if it appears to be shaking or vibrating and is set to the correct speed
- Inspect the air intake and flue. Blockages such as leaves, debris, or even snow can restrict airflow and cause vibrating. Make sure there’s nothing blocking the external pipe and remove any obstructions
- Check the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. Pressure should typically be between 1 bar when the system is cold and rise to about 2 bar when hot. If the pressure is consistently too high, this usually indicates a fault.
If the noise persists or the pressure reading is outside of the recommended range, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Continued operation under these conditions can lead to premature component wear and reduced system efficiency.
Boiler banging noises explained
A banging or knocking sound from your boiler can be unsettling, but it’s often linked to the way your heating system works naturally. Boilers repeatedly heat cold water, which causes pipes and components to expand as they warm up and contract as they cool. This movement can sometimes result it banging or knocking sounds, particularly in older systems.
Over time, this repeated expansion and contraction can cause pipework to loosen, especially under floorboards or behind walls. When hot water suddenly flows through these pipes, it can create a loud banging noise that can echo and sound like its coming from your boiler.
In some cases, banging can also be caused by overheating within the boiler. If water flow is restricted, often due to a build-up of limescale or debris on the heat exchanger, the water can overheat and cause sudden pressure changes, leading to sharp knocking sounds. A faulty thermostat may also be to blame, as it can cause the boiler to misread temperatures and heat water more aggressively than necessary.
- Inspect pipework and secure any loose pipes with clips or padding to prevent movement
- Check your boiler flow temperature which should be set as low as practicable while still meeting your heating needs. However, hot water cylinder temperatures should never be set below 60° C as lower temperatures increase the risk of Legionnaires’ disease.
- Check your thermostat to ensure its functioning correctly. A faulty connection or sensor can cause the boiler to operate inefficiently and create unnecessary noise.
If the banging continues after these checks, it’s time to contact your Gas Safe registered engineer.
Whistling noises from your boiler
If your boiler has started making a high-pitched whistling or kettle-like sound, it’s often a sign that something inside the system isn’t flowing as smoothly as it should. Your heating system is constantly exposed to water, and when water and oxygen come into contact with metal components, corrosions can develop over time. This can lead to rust and debris building up inside pipes and radiators, restricting water flow.
In hardwater areas, minerals such as calcium and magnesium can solidify into limescale. These deposits commonly build up on internal pipework or around the boiler’s heat exchanger, the component responsible for heating the water. As these deposits thicken, they insulate the metal surface, causing the boiler to work harder to heat the water.
When debris or limescale settles on the heat exchanger, the boiler can overheat and generate steam. This process is known as kettling, and it’s what causes the familiar whistling or rumbling noise, much like a kettle when it comes to the boil. If left untreated, kettling can reduce efficiency, increase energy costs, and eventually lead to component failure or a complete boiler breakdown.
As a first step, you can try bleeding your radiators to release any trapped air in the system.

However, if the whistling continues, it’s likely that kettling is the underlying cause. In this case, it’s best to contact a Gas Safe registered engineer who can assess the system, recommend the most appropriate solution, and restore safe and efficient operation.
My boiler is gurgling
A gurgling sound from your boiler is usually harmless, but if it becomes louder or more persistent, it could indicate that something isn’t quite right. In many cases, gurgling is caused by air trapped in the system, but other common causes include low water pressure, a faulty circulation pump, or a blocked condensate pipe.
- Bleed your radiators. Trapped air in the system is the most common cause of gurgling. Bleeding your radiators releases this air, allowing water to flow freely and often resolving the noise quickly
- Check the water pressure. Low water pressure can also cause gurgling. Look at the pressure gauge on your boiler and if it’s below one bar, top up the system according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then recheck the gauge
- Inspect the circulation pump. A malfunctioning pump can prevent hot water from circulating properly, which may create unusual noises and leave your radiators cold. If your boiler isn’t heating water effectively, the pump may need attention from a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Check the condensate pipe. During very cold weather, water can freeze, blocking the pipe. If this happens, gently thaw the pipe using warm, not hot, water. Never use a naked flame.
If the problem persists after you’ve followed these steps, it’s a good idea to call in a qualified engineer.

Whilst some boiler noises can be fixed with a few simple checks, there are times when it’s best to leave things to the professionals. If your boiler is trying to tell you something more serious, acting quickly can help prevent bigger problems further down the line.

- The noise is sudden, unusually loud, or getting worse over time
- Your boiler is repeatedly switching off or struggling to maintain heat
- You notice any leaks, warning lights, error codes, or a drop in heating or hot water performance
- Your boiler hasn’t had a service in the last 12 months
