1. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)

LPG, sometimes referred to as autogas when used to power vehicles, is a non-toxic, non-corrosive, additive-free way to power combustion engines. LPG burns more cleanly and emits far less smoke than traditional alternatives, while providing excellent overall energy efficiency and low fuel consumption. It's particularly useful for farmers, because it has a low CO2 output at the high engine loads common to farm work. Governments throughout Europe, in recognition of these benefits, have granted tax breaks when buying LPG in bulk, allowing farmers to save significant money compared to other fuels.

2. Biomass Boilers

Currently, the only legal fuel for biomass boilers in the U.K. is relatively inefficient, if fragrant, wood. According to an article from Farmer's Weekly, however, this could change soon, as more and more farmers and legislators alike see the usefulness of using chicken litter and other animal waste products as an energy source. A single coop's litter can be used to heat that same coop, reducing heating fuel costs to a negligible amount.

3. Energy Crops

Although corn is currently the world's most frequently grown energy crop, that looks set to change in the future. Recent studies have revealed that switchgrass is significantly more efficient in both extracting ground nutrients and harvesting than corn, and grows in more climates to boot. Alternatively, fast-growing trees such as poplars and sycamores can be repeatedly harvested and regrown within the space of a few years, possibly setting them as the ideal energy solution in the future.
