If you think you're using an excessive amount of heating oil for the size of your home and your usage, it could be down to several factors.
Firstly, it could be down to the age of your boiler. Older boilers are often less efficient and consume more oil, so it may be worth considering upgrading to a new, more efficient model. Alternatively, you may wish to consider switching to an alternative fuel source such as LPG, which is the nearest fuel source to mains gas. LPG boilers are significantly cheaper than heating oil boilers, and are a great choice for off-grid households in rural locations.
Then there's maintenance. It really does pay to look after your boiler - having it serviced annually will keep it running at its maximum efficiency, and also help prolong its life. A heating system that isn't properly maintained will develop problems over time such as dirty filters, clogged nozzles and sooty burners which can lead to costly repairs or even complete breakdowns. Read our 5 top tips for keeping your heating oil boiler in tip-top condition, although for starters we'd always recommend an annual boiler service by an OFTEC-registered heating oil engineer.
Poor insulation may be another factor. Drafts from windows and doors can lead to significant heat loss or your radiators may need bleeding. There are some simple and cost-effective steps you can take to tackle heat loss at home.
Other factors can include severe weather conditions so your boiler has to work harder to keep your home nice and toasty, or increased occupancy. More people in the house often means more hot water is used, so again your boiler has to work harder.
