If you hear hissing sound coming from your LPG tank, it might not be anything to worry about, but it should always be checked. In some cases, it can indicate normal pressure release, while in others it may be a signal of a potential safety issue.
A common cause is the pressure release valve (PRV), which is designed to release small amounts of gas if pressure builds inside the tank, often during warmer weather. You may notice this on hot days when the gas has expanded due to heat. Cooking the tank gently with water from a hose can help reduce pressure and stop the release.
However, if the hissing continues or you notice a strong smell, like rotten eggs, this could indicate a leak. Turn off the supply if it is safe to do so, avoid ignition sources, leave the area immediately and contact LPG your supplier or emergency services.
When in doubt, always treat unusual tank noises seriously and get them checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
