LPG safety in your business

At Northern Commercial LPG, we view gas safety as our top priority to ensure a safe and secure supply of energy – here are some simple steps you can take as a business user of LPG to ensure the safety of your site.

  • Make sure there is good ventilation where your LPG is being stored and used. LPG is heavier than air and if a leak were to develop, there should be plenty of room around your tank to ensure good air flow so that pockets of heavier-than-air LPG vapours cannot build up around them.
  • Ensure your tank and its surroundings are kept free of flammable sources, combustible materials and rubbish, including vegetation. It is important to keep the area around the tank free of rubbish to aid ventilation. If treating vegetation with a weed-killer, ensure you use something that is not chlorate-based as this can make dead plants easier to ignite.
  • Do not paint your LPG tank – doing so in any other colour than originally supplied may affect the amount of heat absorbed from the sun.
  • Always have your LPG appliances maintained by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Ensure that access to your tank is readily available at all times for maintenance purposes, and report any equipment damage or failure to us immediately.
  • Do not allow smoking, use of electrical equipment or parking near the tank. Vehicles should be parked at least 6 meters from the tank and the radius that should be kept free of naked flames varies depending on the size of your tank, but ranges from 2.5 to 7.5 metres.
  • Do not remove, alter or cover up tank stickers – these will contain important contact numbers should an emergency occur.

In the unfortunate event of an emergency, call us immediately on 01423 772 789 (office hours). or outside of office hours, call our 24 hour emergency number on 0115 965 8508. However, in the event of a fire, ring 999 and advise the emergency services that an LPG tank is on the premises.

Remember, LPG has an agent added to give it a distinctive smell to enable you to clearly detect a leak.

Whilst emergencies are rare, leaks do occasionally happen – it is important to know what to do if you smell an LPG leak and to take prompt action:

  • Firstly ensure that all naked flames, no matter how small, are extinguished immediately.
  • Evacuate everyone to upwind of the source of the leak.
  • Turn off the gas supply – but only if it is safe to do so.
  • If the leak is inside your premises, open all doors and windows but DO NOT switch any electrical appliances on or off. For leaks in outdoor areas, cordon off the area where appropriate and consider appointing someone to control access.

What our clients are saying

We had an exceptionally busy period at the pub in summer and ran out of gas from a delivery which would normally have lasted much longer. I rang Northern Energy mid-morning when we discovered our situation and they delivered within 20 minutes! We were all very impressed by the speed and helpfulness of the service which got us out of a potentially very difficult situation. Lunch service went on as normal in our pub.
Thank you, Northern Energy!
Mrs R - Publican

My husband and I are very pleased with your overall service and have recommended your service to other people round about. We rate you 10. Many thanks Mrs B
Yes I would recommend you, I score 10. The 'PPP' keeps my tank topped up, no VAT to pay. A very good efficient firm with nice friendly delivery men. Thank you Mr W

I have always been very happy with the service I've recieved from Northern Energy and in fact have got you 2 more customers in the village. The delivery men are always courteous and I think that goes a long way! Northern Energy get a five star rating from me. Mr C
I am pleased with your automatic top-up system. It saves me worrying about running out and presumably saves you money if you can top up a group of neighbouring customers in one delivery - so win-win. Mr D
We have been very impressed with the service received from Northern Energy. The team are always very friendly and always willing to help in any which way they can. If we are cancelling a delivery there are never any questions asked. Recently we had a new oil tank fitted and the oil was delivered within two days of being ordered (we had allowed up to 5 days). Mr K
As a customer I love the all inclusive package of oil and maintenance that you offer. As a second home owner, we never run out of oil like we do ‘at home’ because you keep us ‘topped up’. Mr C
