LPG safety in the home
When used correctly, LPG is a safe fuel for heating and cooking within your home. However, though it is no more dangerous than oil or natural gas, LPG remains a combustible fuel, and is therefore not without its risks.
Like all gasses, LPG only really presents a problem in the event of a leak. Should you ever smell a leak, call our office on 01423 772 789, or outside office hours, call our 24 hour emergency number: 07712 773 230
What to Do If You Smell an LPG Leak:
- Extinguish all nearby naked flames, no matter how small.
- Evacuate everyone to upwind of the source of the leak.
- If it is safe to do so, turn off the gas supply.
- If the leak is in the house, open all doors and windows.
- Do not switch any electrical appliances ON or OFF.
In the event of a fire, call 999, and tell the Fire Brigade that an LPG tank is on the premises.
LPG Safety – Additional Tips
Keep your LPG tank clean and uncluttered – make sure the area around the tank is free from weeds, rubbish and other combustible materials. Do not build any permanent or temporary structures close to the tank. To prevent the build-up of algae and moss, keep the surface of your LPG tank clean.
Do not interfere with your LPG tank – do not remove any signs, markings, numbers or instructions from the tank, and ensure that all are clearly visible at all times. Do not paint the tank a different colour, as this could affect the temperature of the LPG inside.
Minimise the risk of fire – whether it’s a cigarette, a BBQ or a bonfire, do not allow for any sources of ignition near the LPG tank. The radius that should be kept free of naked flames varies depending on the size of your tank, but ranges from 2.5 to 7.5 metres. Refrain from parking cars next to above-ground LPG tanks, or above below-ground tanks.
Allow for regular maintenance – keep access to your tank and service valves clear at all times to allow for quick and easy maintenance. Familiarise yourself with the location of any underground pipes. Report any equipment damage or failure to us immediately. We can be reached on 01423 772 789 during office hours, or outside office hours, our 24 hour emergency number is 07712 773 230.
If you choose a below-ground tank over an above-ground tank, we will ask you to excavate a hole in your garden in preparation for installation. When choosing an area for excavation, there are a few additional factors you should take into consideration for maximum LPG safety. For more information on tank options, click here.
