Oil safety:

Cleaning up oil spills can be difficult, inconvenient and extremely costly. Oil is toxic and can potentially cause damage to the environment – it is harmful to plants, and if it passes through soil and reaches groundwater, it can pollute public and private water supplies. Clean up’s can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, not to mention causing a great deal of inconvenience too.

We would recommend you check your home insurance policy to confirm it covers oil leaks and the cost of any clean-up work – if not, consider upgrading your policy to cover this. Generally, domestic insurers will only cover sudden or unforeseen events and will not always pay out for domestic heating oil spills, especially if your fuel storage tank and pipes are in poor condition and have not been maintained.

However, prevention is better than cure – check your tank, pipe work, gauges, and sight valves regularly to ensure they are kept in good condition. Look for corrosion, bulging, damage, interference and signs of leaks.  Our boiler servicing package includes this check and all our engineers are fully qualified and OFTEC registered.

If you do not have a bunded tank, consider changing to one – a bunded tank will prevent pollution in the case of a leak by providing an extra layer of protection, essentially giving you a tank within a tank.

Monitor and familiarise yourself with your usual rate of usage – if you appear to be using more oil than usual, check for leaks immediately.

What to do if an oil leak occurs:

In the unfortunate event of an oil leak occurring, it is important to know what to do.  If your equipment is regularly maintained it is unlikely a leak will occur, but should you notice an oil leak:

  • Try to identify the source of the leak and stem the flow at source by turning the tap off where possible and safe to do so.
  • Call the Environment Agency’s free 24 hour emergency pollution hotline on 0800 807 060 for advice on how to deal with a leak.
  • Place a container such as a bucket under the leak to collect any further spillage.
  • Take action quickly to try to prevent the oil from spreading to nearby buildings or entering a river, drain, or ground water by putting down earth or soil to absorb the spill.
  • Soak up any spilled oil you can with an absorbent material, such as sand, newspapers, old towels or cat litter and dispose of these carefully as they will be highly inflammable.
  • Do not use detergents or a hose to wash away the spilt oil as this can make the problem worse.
  • If you have a plastic tank, rub soap into the split to seal if possible. This is only a temporary solution!
  • Contact your fuel supplier for advice on how to remove any remaining fuel from your tank
  • Inform your property insurers about the leak.

What our clients are saying

We have just had a delivery this morning. The driver is new and I just wanted you to know how efficient he was and very friendly. He told us about your new vehicle which will be able to access hard to reach properties if the weather is bad and the big tankers cannot get access. Mr S
We had an exceptionally busy period at the pub in summer and ran out of gas from a delivery which would normally have lasted much longer. I rang Northern Energy mid-morning when we discovered our situation and they delivered within 20 minutes! We were all very impressed by the speed and helpfulness of the service which got us out of a potentially very difficult situation. Lunch service went on as normal in our pub.
Thank you, Northern Energy!
Mrs R - Publican

Your telephone is answered quickly and in a friendly manner followed up with call/message of delivery date. Mrs B
My husband and I are very pleased with your overall service and have recommended your service to other people round about. We rate you 10. Many thanks Mrs B
Yes I would recommend you, I score 10. The 'PPP' keeps my tank topped up, no VAT to pay. A very good efficient firm with nice friendly delivery men. Thank you Mr W
Been with you now since 2005 would recommend you to anyone Mr W

I have always been very happy with the service I've recieved from Northern Energy and in fact have got you 2 more customers in the village. The delivery men are always courteous and I think that goes a long way! Northern Energy get a five star rating from me. Mr C
I am pleased with your automatic top-up system. It saves me worrying about running out and presumably saves you money if you can top up a group of neighbouring customers in one delivery - so win-win. Mr D
We have been very impressed with the service received from Northern Energy. The team are always very friendly and always willing to help in any which way they can. If we are cancelling a delivery there are never any questions asked. Recently we had a new oil tank fitted and the oil was delivered within two days of being ordered (we had allowed up to 5 days). Mr K
As a customer I love the all inclusive package of oil and maintenance that you offer. As a second home owner, we never run out of oil like we do ‘at home’ because you keep us ‘topped up’. Mr C
