Great news – tanker driver strike averted!
15th May 2012

The threat of a national fuel strike has been averted after tanker drivers narrowly voted to accept a deal, ending the long-running row over terms and conditions. Drivers from seven firms narrowly backed the deal by 51%, securing them better pay and conditions, although drivers in four other companies rejected it.

Edward Davey, Energy and Climate Change Secretary said in response to the news that strike action has been averted:

‘This is the right result for those involved in the dispute and the economy’.

OFTEC – useful information for oil users

OFTEC, the Oil Firing Technical Association that represents the oil heating and cooking industry in the UK, has produced a number of Home Guides and Information Sheets for users of oil-fired heating and cooking appliances that explain what is involved in installing and maintaining this type of equipment.

Further news on potential strike action by tanker drivers
27th March 2012

The strike ballot of over 2,500 tanker drivers in the Unite trade union closed yesterday, 26th March. Tanker drivers delivering fuel to petrol pumps across the UK have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a dispute over safety and growing instability in the fuel industry, No date for the proposed strike action has yet been confirmed but Unite must give 7 day’s notice of any action, which is likely to be nationwide.

Information received from one of our suppliers is indicating that the strikes are likely to commence on 2nd or 3rd April, i.e. the week leading up to Easter.

Northern Energy sponsors local primary school

Northern Energy Supplies is delighted to sponsor a race night to be held by Sharow Church of England Primary School on Saturday 24th March 2012 as part of its continuing commitment to supporting the local community.

FOSS, (Friends of Sharow C of E Primary School) is made up of parents and teaching staff who volunteer their time to help and support the school with its fundraising events.

The race night is to raise funds to enhance the education of children attending the North Yorkshire school.  In the past, monies have been used to purchase items such as musical instruments, sports equipment and to help fund school excursions.

Warning of further industrial action
19th March 2012

A strike ballot of over 2,500 tanker drivers in the Unite trade union is currently underway with the ballot due to close on 26th March.  Industrial action across the petroleum fuel delivery sector is proposed and likely to commence in the week leading up to Easter as Unite must give 7 days' notice of any action.

Proposed action could disrupt oil supplies nationwide as protestors attempt to block tankers from leaving refineries. 

Northern Energy would like to urge you not to panic, but to be aware of the impending action. We will monitor the situation closely and advise of any further developments.

The Sadie Rose Appeal

Sadie Rosie FamilyIn our commitment to help local causes, Northern Energy has raised £500 to donate to the Sadie Rose appeal but would like to add to that sum and will be delighted to donate a further £10 to the appeal for every new customer who orders 900 litres or more of heating oil between 1st March and 30th April 2012. All you have to do is quote 'Sadie Rose' when you place your order and we will do the rest – just give us a call on 01423 770666.

Over the years we have raised funds for causes such as St Michael's Hospice and the Woodlands Children Ward at Harrogate District Hospital – our fund-raising enabled the hospital to purchase a defibrillator as well as to refurbish the recovery room enabling parents of sick children to stay at hospital with them.

More weather warnings

The BBC today reported temperatures as low as minus 12 degrees in parts of Yorkshire last night, and forecasters are predicting that the cold spell will last for the whole of February with the possibility of up to 8 inches of snow falling tomorrow night in parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire . Chief Executive of The Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (the trade association for the oil distribution industry), Mark Askew, has issued the following advice to oil users throughout the country:

"Now is the time when householders and businesses should be starting to think about what their needs are going to be and not to leave it to the last minute when the bad weather has taken hold and tanker drivers struggle to get through on roads covered in snow or ice.'

The Met office has issued a level 3 cold weather alert covering Thursday 2nd February to Sunday 5th February 2012 with a 100% probability of severe cold weather. On Saturday they expect a band of snow to move slowly across England and Wales during the afternoon and evening, with accumulations of around 5cm likely in places, including low lying areas.

So basically it is going to be very cold!

Local pensioner wins free heating oil from family-run supplier, Northern Energy North East!

local pensionerWith a typical British winter setting in, nights are now rapidly getting darker and colder and this is the time where we all reach to our thermostats.  One lucky local resident, pensioner John Davison from Wark, entered Northern Energy North East’s free prize draw at Bellingham show, and is delighted to have been the successful winner of 1,000 litres of free heating oil.

You may have seen Northern Energy North East at some of our local shows this summer where employees of the independent, family-run supplier of heating oil and LPG were pleased to have the opportunity to meet with members of the local community
